Taking care of your Diamonds and showing them off

So many people have such beautiful diamond jewelry , and hardly ever wear it. It's really a shame that they aren't letting themselves enjoy it.  It doesn't need to be sitting in a drawer somewhere, or in a safe.

Granted there are times to not wear your precious gems. Like when you are doing manual labor in the yard, or doing strenuous activities. Diamonds aren't indestructible as many may think. If you think about it, then they would never be able to be cut or faceted or polished. Diamonds have a cleavage plane in the crystal structure where the carbon bonds are a little weaker.  So if you are doing an activity where the diamond in your ring per say, can hit something hard with force, its possible for it to break or chip.

And if you already do wear your diamond jewelry often, (like we hope you do) please get it checked out by a jeweler every 6 months or so. Sometimes the prongs  do come loose, and need to be tightened.

And by going to the jeweler, he can clean your jewelry also. Most jewelers have a steam machine or ultrasonic cleaner. Diamonds really attract dust and grease. I'll bet if you look at the bottom (pavilion) of your diamond in the setting it looks whitish. That's the build up you need to remove. it will make your diamond look dull. Diamond facets are mirrors, and reflect everything around it. So you want it to be clean and brilliant.  I personally do a three step approach at home. I do have an ultrasonic cleaner that i bought on Amazon. It was less than $50.  So what i like to do is put it in the ultrasonic with just water in it for around 5 minutes. This gets most things off and  looses up what hasn't come off. Then I use some dish washing liquid with a soft toothbrush and scrub the top and bottom of the ring/diamond. (remember to put the drain strainer in). Then I put it in the ultrasonic again just in case something remains, or I didn't get all the soap off.

So back to the original thought process. WEAR your diamonds. You can never be too fancy.  And of course you should always have your diamond jewelry insured. Then you have no worries if it gets lost or stolen.

I personally recommend Jewelers Mutual  to all my clients when they buy jewelry from me. Their prices are great. The insurance covers loss, theft, mysterious disappearance and breakage. you really can't beat the coverage for the money.  They know the jewelry business.  Even though you think you have coverage with your homeowners, double check what is actually covered and the deductible. Jewelers Mutual Insurance offers zero deductible.  Just as an example, a $5,000 engagement ring is around $60 a year.
